Meditation is one of the best ways to calm and relax yourself, relieving stress and anxiety. In fact, more and more doctors are starting to believe that it can be an important part of maintaining health, especially for those dealing with stress related problems, such as high blood pressure and frequent headaches.
If you've never tried it before, consider beginning with the following techniques:
1.Feeling Your Breathing
Learning how to feel and catch the rhythm of your breathing is one of the best ways to meditate, as well as one of the best ways to begin a long session. Put yourself in a quite place and sit comfortably. Simply close your eyes and start focusing on your breathing. Feel how the air moves in and out of your lungs and how your body feels as you inhale and exhale. You don't need to breathe deeply, just let your body relax and breathe normally. Focus on your breathing for a few minutes if you plan on moving on to another technique, or simply stick to this technique for the entire session.
2.Body Relaxation
Lie flat on your back with your arms on your sides and your legs stretched out and slight separated. Let your body fall into a relaxed position. Let yourself breathe normally and then start focusing on different aspects of your body, telling your body to relax and stay calm. As you go through the different parts of your body; your limbs, your torso, your head, etc., you'll find that your entire body will relax. This is one of the best techniques to do before going to bed.
3.Visualization
This can be extremely powerful, especially if you are dealing with a problem. It involves starting with the first technique. After breathing for some time, start visualizing yourself in a peaceful place. Remember to note everything about the place, its smells, the way it looks, how your skin feels, what you're wearing, the weather conditions, etc. You might find it easier if you visualize a place you've been to and were relaxed in. After you have reached a state of relaxation, remain "in" the place for some time, making sure your body feels good and your mood is lifted. Once you're done meditating, you can think about the problem again, and you're likely to find a solution you hadn't thought of before.
Alternatively, some people choose to visualize themselves solving the problem. This can be frustrating, however, because the focus is shifted on the problem and not relaxing.
Remember to be patient with yourself as you learn how to master these meditation techniques. It can take a while, especially if you are doing it without the help of a class or specific guide book. Also remember to stay positive and maintain an attitude geared towards successful meditation. Having negative feelings will make it harder for you to concentrate and succeed.
