Standardized Herbal extract is a concentrated dried residue of herb after extracting with alcohol or water. Normally the fluid used in the extraction is critical since it must extract all of the important medicinal ingredients present in the fresh or dry herb. The solvent varies as per constitution of herb, and ranges from water to alcohol to even liquid carbon dioxide coupled with criticality of extraction temperature and length of time. Preparation of herbal extract involves various processes like maceration, percolation, soxhlation, water or air reflux, distillation and vacuum drying.
Herbal extracts can be standardized in two ways; one is based on identifying and quantifying an extract to a characteristic chemical marker compound and the second, identifying and quantifying an extract to one or more active constituents.
Herbal extract is a liquid solution of herbs and alcohol. The dried or fresh herbs are combined with alcohol, then the solid matter is removed leaving only the oils of the herbs mixed with the alcohol. This process is called extraction, hence the name, herbal extract. For example an extract made from peppermint and alcohol would be called "peppermint extract." Herbal extracts are sold as dietary supplements and alternative medicine and commonly used for flavoring in baking and other cooking much like vanilla extract. Herbal extracts are often referred to as tinctures by herbalists and alternative medicine practitioners.
The extraction processing capacity is equipped with various combination of extractors and percolators, modern and efficient distillation system, reaction vessels, glass-lined reactors, ultra modern technology in filtration and separation, chromatographic columns and dryers (including spray dryer, tray dryer, vacuum tray dryer, fluid bed dryer, flash dryer) to handle wide range of products. The entire manufacturing process is supervised and monitored by the team of highly experienced professionals of the industry to ensure the consistent quality product in the managed time schedule.
Most commercially sold herbal extracts have a herb to alcohol ratio printed on the label. When dry herbs were used to make the extract the ratio is commonly 1 part dried plant to 4 parts liquid, (alcohol and water). When fresh herbs are used the most common ratio is 1:1. This does not indicate the amount of that herb in the bottle, rather the ratio used in making the extract. Example: Dry herb strength: 1:4 means that the mixture used to produce the extract was 4 parts liquid, (alcohol and water) and one part dried plant.
