Ayurveda- Books on Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a system of natural healing that has been around for over 5000 years and is the traditional system of medicine in India. Ayurveda is called "a science of life".
Ayurvedic treatment is not just a system of treating illness, it is a holistic approach with the belief optimum health is the balance between our body, mind and souls.
It is based on each individual depending on lifestyle, diet, exercise and yoga, herbal therapy, and even spiritual practices to restore and maintain balance in body and mind.
Ayurveda recognizes that human beings are part of nature and describes three energies that govern our inner and outer environments. These three energies or "Dosha's" are known in Sanskrit as Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Earth). These Doshas are responsible for each person's characteristics. It is believed each of us has a unique proportion of these three Doshas that shape who we are. Even though we all have all three Dosha's, most people have one or two that are most dominant.
For each Dosha, there is a balance and imbalance.
When Vata is balanced a person is artistic and creative with a good imagination. If Vata is imbalanced, a person may experience nervousness, insomnia, poor appetite, constipation and moodiness.
When Pitta is in balance, a person is articulate, organized, friendly, and goal oriented.
When out of balance, a person can become irritable and may suffer from indigestion.
When Kapha is balanced, a person is calm, compassionate and loyal.
But when out of balance, can become lethargic, and gain weight.
An important goal of Ayurvedic treatment is to identify a person's ideal state of balance, determine where they are out of balance and offer interventions using diet, herbs, aromas, massage, music and meditation to reestablish balance.
