Health Concerns-What Concerns You Most About Your Health
As our ages increase so do concerns about our health. From the common cold to debilitating cancer and heart disease, public health concerns are mounting. And all too many Americans believe their health can be found in an amber bottle filled with pills.
Drugs treat symptoms, they do not cure
Prescription drug sales total in the billions, yet the overwhelming effect of most drugs is to merely treat the symptoms. And our health care providers seem to perpetuate this situation, writing and renewing prescriptions month after month.
The Caveman Diet
And the root cause of the rising tide of illness may be what we have been putting into our mouths. Scientists are attempting to learn from the diet of cavemen (Cro-Magnons) who lived 20-30,000 years ago. Their diet was based on vegetables, fruit, nuts, roots and meat. This Paleolithic diet did not include cereals (grains), potatoes, bread and milk were not included.
It was not until about 10,000 years ago that the earth's inhabitants began cultivating crops that our diets evolved to include what we now think of as staple foods. Current research is trying to determine if the food eaten by these hunter-gatherers would benefit our modern day nutrition.
The introduction of Processed Foods and the TV Tray
3 to 4 generations ago our ancestors began to see tin cans containing processed foods populating the shelves of general stores all across the land. Heat em and eat em. Then came frozen foods and frozen dinners. The TV tray was invented to fill the need for a place to sit our dinner plate while watching Ed Sullivan and Milton Berle.
Next came fast food joints scattered across the landscape. People simply wanted a break from slaving over a hot stove.
We have come a long way from those Cro-Magnon people huddled around a fire in some dank, damp cave eating grasses, nuts and berries. But what has been the cost-cancer, heart disease, diabetes name the disease and someone living near you has it. We are destroying our immune system.
The Alkaline Diet
Just recently heath researchers and nutritionists have offered the theory that because our bodies are alkaline in nature, we should limit or avoid foods that are highly acidic. Acidic foods include most meats, most fruits (due to the sugar content), and some vegetables. The most alkaline foods include broccoli, asparagus, some beans, avocado, and spinach.
But do not think that because meats are acidic you must avoid them at all costs. Just limit the serving-size and balance the acidic character of meat with large servings of alkaline veggies. Acidosis (too much acid in the blood stream), according to some scientists, may just be the catalyst that triggers a multitude of diseases including diabetes.
A worthwhile source of health information
