There is an abundance of treatments for stuttering, stuttering remedies, both in traditional medications and homeopathic. As a former actor I was always surprised at the fact that the few actors I knew that stuttered never would do so during a performance. It always seemed that once they were confident in what they were saying, they never would stammer or even stutter. So is that the secret to not stuttering, confidence. Well according to statistics, roughly three million people in the U.S. alone suffer the embarrassment of stuttering. Do they all simply display a lack of confidence or self-esteem? Or is it much deeper than that?
According to The Stuttering Foundation, established in 1947, there are four factors most likely to contribute to the development of stuttering: genetics ( approximately 60% of those who stutter have a family member who does also); child development (children with other speech and language problems or developmental delays are more likely to stutter); neurophysiology ( recent research has shown that people who stutter process speech and language in different areas of the brain than those who do not stutter); and family dynamics ( high expectations and fast-paced lifestyles can contribute to stuttering). The ratio of males to females who stutter is four to one, and 20 percent of children will be affected in some way. They go on to state that there is no proof emotional trauma cause stuttering, either in adults or children.
So what about my theory on the lack of self confidence? I guess I was wrong. Because if self confidence leads to success as most of us think, then it really doesn't have anything to do with stuttering. Just look at some of the famous people who have made it despite being stutters. James Earl Jones, Bill Walton, Mel Tillis, Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, Carly Simon, Ken Venturi, Bob Love, John Updike, King George VI, are all are famous people who stuttered and went on to have successful lives. And while we are at it, let's not forget Tiger Woods, perhaps the most confident person on the planet.
As far as cures go, most experts will tell you that there is no such thing. Keep in mind these are the same people that are selling you their medicine, and conducting their stuttering therapy sessions. If you are familiar with the great motivational speaker Tony Robbins, he has a technique he teaches to stop stuttering. You don't have to attend one of his expensive seminars however. Steve Stanley has personally been taught by Tony, and he has put the technique on a video called the "stuttering annihilation technique." It is absolutely guaranteed to stop your stuttering because it identifies all the triggers that currently get you to start stuttering... and then installs new responses to the old triggers that will empower you, instead of cause you to stutter.
